File Renamer Utility is a light software tool developed by BurnSoft with a very specific goal - to allow you to rename large amounts of files quickly following a set of specific parameters defined by you. In addition, File Renamer Utility supports batch file renaming, a feature that lets you list several renaming tasks and execute them all at once.

Even though this program offers a very intuitive interface, it also includes a pretty helpful feature called "Walk Me Thru", a menu that guides you through the entire process of renaming your files by displaying tooltip balloons that explains you what you need to do, where to do it and in which order. You can either display them individually at each step or let the program automatically display them all in the right order, resembling a quick and basic tutorial.

Whether you make use of the "Walk Me Thru" feature or not, the file renaming process itself is still very easy. You are allowed to choose the "Naming Schema", the main text that will be used to form the new file names; the Counter Start, the number with which the sequence of new names will begin; the Counter Increment for each new file name generated; the Number Format Spaces, or the number of digits that will form the numeric part of the new names; and, finally, you can also tell the program if you want to replace the original file name completely or to just to add the generated character chain before or after it, keeping the original string untouched. It is also very important to note that the program will modify the file names but not their extensions, thus preserving your files' functionality.

But there is also another key asset in this program- the capability to keep a History Tracking. You can enable or disable it, but it is highly recommended that you work with this option enabled, since it will allow you to go back to a file’s original name, for instance, in case you renamed it accidentally. It keeps an exact record of what file was renamed and to what new file name.

Besides all the functionality mentioned above, the program also allows you to choose a work directory, to use search patterns to locate only those files you need to rename, and to have a preview of how the new files will look like once you have renamed them. When you are completely satisfied with your settings, you can finally add your file list to the command queue and rename them all in just one go. The name changing process is really fast.
